February 6, 2004

it must be february, because the weather has been terrible. i think. i haven't been outside much this week, as we've been putting together lustre 1.0.4 (the rpms are building as i type this...). a couple of weeks ago i was pretty excided about 1.0.3, but it turns out we fixed a good number of bugs (some of which have been in there for a long time). also, i played a role in a number of these bugs getting fixed which is nice too.

the bruins have been on fire as of late.

i'm going to have some ice cream while this finishes building.

it's almost as if i planned for this

last night when i came home i noticed that my lustre server was spewing ide errors. this morning, i popped in my spare disk, booted (i had already set up grub on the secondary disk, and the bios to try the secondary disk as well) and added the new disk to the raid partitions.

md3 : active raid1 hda6[2] hdc6[1] 155862528 blocks [2/1] [_U] [=======>.............] recovery = 39.3% (61384092/155862528) finish=34.5min speed=45548K/sec

my shuttle still turns off, even with the new fans and stuff.

last night i watched american splendor and then i had a strange dream about it, where i met the guy and stuff. it was weird because i remembered a movie last week i'd seen then met the guy from it as well.

all those things i forgot to say

last night i had a dream which was basically like that scene from family guy where death is trying to drive drunk. i was trying to turn this corner - like really slowly - and nudged a police car. that's like 2 car dreams in the last week.

i still love sleeping under my blankets with earplugs and waking up and having no idea what time it is.

i got 2112 and fly by night so i updated the rush time for yesterday's entry. i hadn't bought a rush album in years... maybe i did in 2000 when i would buy 12 cds a week. anyway they moved up like 3 spots.

there's nothing to eat for breakfast

sometimes you do have to improvise. leftover pickle juice, some sour skittles, and 3-year-old bisquik...

last night i had a strange dream where i was going to vietnam for some army operation thing. i was going to tell veanne that i was going to visit vietnam but then i decided not to because i didn't want to mention it on the internet and risk the secrecy of the mission.

the car was packed up and i was at the airport where i ran into a friend from middle school before i woke up. it was pretty strange.

today seemed pretty good.

my friend zab is smart. i was asking him how to do some things with iptables, and he suggested using two other things entirely. these other solutions look like they'll work much better, too.

because of that and my other friend shaver's work this weekend, i can use my email without ssh tunnels. yay.

and the bruins dominated the leafs from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. i can't wait for ottawa to win the division so the bruins and leafs can duke it out in the first round.

the deafening sound of shoes dropping

today was just about as bad as i'd feared it might be.

well at least there's hockey tomorrow.

i need more distcc-able nodes. i spend too much of my time waiting for things that aren't ccache-able to compile. but then again, it helped me finally win mario & luigi: superstar saga. although now that it's done, i don't have anything to do while things compile.

the other day i was in a taxi with phil, going to the airport, and we heard a noise coming from the right rear wheelwell. we both figured it was a chunk of snow or ice, since it had snowed that morning. five minutes later we heard another noise, and then the driver mumbled something we couldn't hear.

Phil: excuse me?
Driver: I THINK WE HAVE FLAT TIRE!
Me: (pointing out window) yeah, there goes the hub cap...

he called for another taxi, who was there in a couple of minutes and we even had enough time to stop by the air canada lounge, where i got to tell shaver the story.

summer's here

it was actually above 50 yesterday, so i figured we should kick off summer with a trip to the barking crab. phil or i had the great idead to split an order of king crab legs as a side and order something else as the main meal. i will not be the last to tell you how great this idea was, but it definitely was great. not only was i not hungry when i left, but it wasn't nearly as expensive as it usually is.

i was planning on putting a couple spare 2.5" drives in the shuttle (since i think they are cooler). i didn't have mdadm on that box, so i started up rcd and...

after a minute or so it shut off, with the overheat led on.

so i did a little research on the internet and people said not to use the copper shim, and not to use much heat goo, and to underclock the bus to 132MHz, and some other things. so we'll see.

i took some pictures of the laptop drives in the shuttle, since it's really cute (they didn't have mounting brackets, so i have them side-by-side in a 5.25" bay). but i can't find my camera's usb cable so i'll have to wait.
