July 1, 2000
Woke up around 3 in the PM, I think.
Went to the office then back home to put some shorts on.
My parents called while I was heading back to the office.
They got back from their fishing trip in canadia and were
telling me about it. I am mostly glad I didn't go, seeing as
I had a really fun week here, and I think I don't like fishing
so much these days. Also, the place they went was the place
last year that we went, which was when our dog died.
There have been quite a few articles about Helix and GNOME 1.2
this week, from some of the Linux web magazine things.
They've almost all been tremendously positive, It is really
nice to read them, since there was a tremendous amount of work
that was put into it by myself, and the gnome and helix teams,
and after the initial not-so-goodness of the 1.2 release,
things have turned out very good. La la la.
People are pretty weird. Especially when it comes to feelings
and stuff. It is really nice that I can be able to be happy
and stuff these days. Hopefully it will last for a long time.
Went to cafe pamplona with nat, mig, vlad, peter, and matt.
Got "Happiness", one of my favorite movies.
Went to Ginza, then watched happiness at the Cave. People
thought it was disturbing, but nobody seemed to say it was
bad.

July 2, 2000
Sad day today. Ah well, life moves on.
* * *
July 3, 2000
Work: email in the morning, building packages in the afternoon.
Ordered the new
laptop today. I hope it comes before the we move into the
new offices.
Lunch at KHOP with peter, then coffee with miggie and nat.
Watched some Friends and Tom Green at the Cave, which now has
some wavelan.
* * *
July 4, 2000
Played with some gnome-vfs stuff in the panel.
Walked to the Cave. There were a lot of people out.
Watched some Friends.
I found out that some guy from college I didn't like got his
girlfriend pregnant and left her, since his parents said they
would disown him. So like he is rich and stuff and this
really sucks for her. The only positive thing I can thin
about this is that now my friends and I have a real reason not
to like that guy.
Went to the fireworks.
Some new
VAIOS got announced or something. So now I am going to
have to rationalize getting the one with the smaller display.
Cave hanging out action.

July 5, 2000
Usual Tuesday meetings. Fun fun fun.
Added gnome-python related packages to the build system.
Worked a bit more on the stripped RPMs.
Wrote a validator for updates.xml, which should have been done
a long time ago.
Watched some Friends at the Cave.

July 6, 2000
Woke up early for a 9:30 AM meeting which didn't happen.
Went to Leo's Place in Harvard Square for breakfast with Peter
and Joe.
Got "Programming Python", since gnome-python is in
Helix GNOME now.
Uploaded the new RPMs.
Had said meeting.
Dinner with Joe, Melissa, and Jamie at the Italian place I
went to last week. It was better this time. I ate all of my
mussels.
Watched "Good Morning Vietnam"
* * *
July 7, 2000
More packaging stuff.
Lunch at a vietnamese place in harvard square. Then I had to
get some McDonald's later cause I was still hungry.
Movie night: "Scary Movie". It was no "The
Perfect Storm", that's for sure.
Went to some place with Nat and Fedi and Haylor and Harold,
but it wasn't the place for Harold and I so we went to the
Cave.
Watched 5 Friends episodes. Included was the most funniest
Friends moment evern. Hahahahaha.
Started to fall asleep on the couch at the cave so I walked
home.

July 8, 2000
Woke up, went to the office. Didn't have the charger thing
for my laptop so walking to the Cave action occured.
Went with nat to some sporting places at Harvard Square. They
sucked.
Went to City Sports, or something. They had some awesome
blades so some purchasing action occured.
So, my blades rule. They are like, perfection, in rollerblade
form.
Ended up eating at some place in Harvard Square with Nat.
Cave hanging out on the IRC. Blah blah blah.

July 9, 2000
Went to see Dave Matthews with Nat, Italiano, and Lisa
(Lisa... no, you don't know her). It would have been more fun
if I liked Dave Matthews. It is bothersome to me, since I
can't think of a good reason why I don't like them. They are
like good musicians, and their drummer is awesome, but it just
does nothing for me. Anyway, there were lots of people
enjoying themselves.
Football stadiums are so crappy. Fenway is like 300 years
old, but it so much nicer than Foxboro. It is a good thing
they don't play baseball there, like they do at Three Rivers.
Bleh. What a travesty.
Went to IHOP for some eating. Again, I had the Quick Two-Egg.
I got over-medium eggs, which I am now preferring ever since
the Leo's incident.

July 10, 2000
More Cars on the alarm clock this morning.
More package updating. The hackers were busy this weekend.
Vainly tried to obtain the Sony DVP-FX1. I don't think it is
out yet. The one Circuit City said they had it, but they only
had the Panasonic.
More package building.
I had forgotten how much I love rollerblading. It is too bad
this stupid city puts down sand in the winter, cause there is
still some of that stuff blowing around and getting into my
bearings.
I am hungry.

July 11, 2000
Woke up at 8 something. Evidently they play sports talk at
this hour, instead of good music.
Did some updates for some of the distros, including fixing
some sawmill capplet stuff.
Lunch at Leo's Place with Nat. I had a donut this time too.
Then Nat went and bought a shirt.
Couch hacking with Joe. I was so enthralled with the moment
that I don't remember what happened.
Ice Cream Party. I spilled ice cream on my Vaio. It was
scary.
Weekly Meeting. Blah blah.
Started working on some Evolution RPMs.
Went to the Cave to watch some Friends and continued to work
on the RPMs.
Algiers action.
For some reason, 45 minutes before Friends was going to start,
people decided to upgrade the TiVo. This is not going very
well. We are missing Friends. Not Good.
(Hi Joe's mom)
So we had to get out the little 13 inch tv to watch some very
static filled Friends. This is definitely a low point in my
week.
* * *
July 12, 2000
Woke up to I think ELP.
Hacked on the Evolution RPMs all day, mostly.
Caved in and got the bt cd Nat drives around with. Noticed a
Jimmy Page / Black Crowes live cd, so I figured I would get
it. It is really good. I love "Hey Hey What Can I
Do".
Released said RPMs.
Watched some Friends at the Cave with Joe.

July 13, 2000
My laptop is here.
Did an interview with linux.com about working at Helix.
Joe was supposed to be there too but he is sick.
Started setting up my laptop.
Dinner at the Tapas place by the Cave with Miguel. It was
pretty good.
* * *
July 14, 2000
More laptop setting up.
I think i fixed some problems with the sawmill RPMs. The
solution isn't so great, but I think it will work a bit
better.
Movie Night: X-Men. Pretty good. No Shaft, but no The
Perfect Storm. No AC in the theater either which made things
a little bit fun.
After the movie, we again ate at the Tapas place by the Cave.
Discovered they have pretty good fried calamari, and fries
came with it. Interesting.
Everyone decided to go dancing, either at the Lava Bar or
Sophia's, so I decided to head home. I was pretty tired.

July 15, 2000
Decided to give Evolution a chance as my main mail reader.
Wrote a little script to make the subfolders, since the UI for
this is not so great. Also made filter rules for all of the
folders I have in Gnus. It is so far much easier to do in
Gnus.
Pushed 180 MB of email through Evolution's filters. It still
has some scaling issues. Apparently it indexes the spool
before importing it (which it does in memory). I had to make
an emergency swap file so that I didn't run out of swap.
Also, importing new mail is pretty slow too, since it seems to
be re-indexing all of my folders again.
Dinner at Fire 'n Ice with Bambino, Federico, Joe, and Miguel.

July 16, 2000
Fun with SuSE today. The new gnome-utils .spec file rules.
Saw X-Men again.
Some water damage at the sweatshop. I didn't get it on film though.
So now Miguel is calling me "Friedman" and Nat calls me "Miggie".
* * *
July 18, 2000
I am not at OLS.

July 19, 2000
Slept an hour longer than i wanted to. Didn't go blading on
the esplanade like I have been wanting to do in the morning.
I guess I am not as much of a morning person in the summer as
I thought I was.
Finished doing some updates for SuSE (6.3 and 6.4) and
TurboLinux.
Went with Federico and Peter to Tweeter to look for a discman
for Federico. They didn't have any, but they did have the
Sony portable DVD player.
I did not purchase it.
I also did not get the cool little video camera or headphones
they had there.
Went to some other place and Fedi and i got the discman. It
is very nice.
Uploaded a new installer that didn't have the floating point
issues with SuSE. For some unknown reason, this installer
seems to be crashing sometimes on startup. Doing 'sh -c
<installer>' seems to work though. That does not make me
feel very good.
Coffee with nat at pamplona where we ran into jenny.
Built some updates for the other distros but didn't update
updates.xml for them as I am too tired. Tomorrow is LinuxPPC
day.
I did not watch any Friends today as i worked instead.
* * *
July 20, 2000
Overheard:
<Nat_> AC off-line, battery status critical: 0% (0:00)
<Nat_> it's been like that for 20 minutes
-!- Nat_ has quit IRC [Ping timeout: 181 seconds]
* * *
July 21, 2000
Finished the LinuxPPC updates and uploaded them. Finally.
Rewrote the distro-checking code in the updater. It is much
slicker now :)
Some eating at a nice little Italian place by the movies.
Movie Night: Tonight's movie was "The In Crowd". I
will refrain from making any jokes on the title. Anyway,
nobody really wanted to see it and there were like 5 people in
the theater (one of whom was Federico waiting for us), so we
went and saw X-Men in the big theater. So now I've seen that
like 3 times in a week. The good news is that they really did
mess up where I had thought they did (you can see the frog
dude's harness/cable thingie in one (actually maybe 2)
scenes). Blah blah blah.
Eventually made it back to the Cave to watch some friends.
The 5 episodes went by so fast.
Walked home and went to sleep. I think it was lke 4:30 or
something.
Not too long later, I found myself sitting on my steps
outside my apartment. Nat decided that he wanted to get
some work done at the office, but he hadn't brought any keys
with him, so he called me to let him into the office. I
guess he just hadn't planned this part very well.
Oh, it was raining now.
So I get my key stuck in my apartment front door. (Remember
this part, it will come into play later)
So nat finds his little plastic key cause his car key is of
course at home. Then we drove back to his place to get his
keys and back to my place so i could sleep.
So, remember that part a little while ago about my key getting
stuck? Well, now it doesn't unlock the front door. Which
isn't so good, since unlocking doors is what keys do. Well,
good keys. I wish my key had a TiVo remote so I could give it
3 big red thumbs down. BAD KEY!

July 22, 2000
Went for a walk in the beautiful Boston. Ended up at Tweeter,
but this time with my laptop so I could see if I could get the
sony memory stick thing in the cameras working.
I could (actually it was very easy). So, now I have to decide
if this camera will really fill a hole in my life.
Did some work on the updater...
Went rollerblading at the esplanade again. It is really nice.
I still need to go when there are fewer [ed: is that correct,
joe?] people there.
Went to Subway after that. My life is better now that Subway
is involved again. Went home and had my first meal in my
apartment. (I have been here something like 6 months and
hadn't eaten there yet)
Walked around listening to some good music and ended up
sitting at Nat's. Decided to wavelan from the steps. Wavelan
rules.
Went home soon after that, as I was pretty tired.

July 23, 2000
For some reason I decided to play with my kernel today. So i
enabled fbcon support, and decided that I wanted the Helix
monkeybutton instead of the penguin on bootup.
Started writing an xpm2linux_logo program. After a while, got
it to look like it works. After fixing something I
misunderstood, I rebooted and there was the dancing monkey.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the palette stuff totally right so
it was a bit messed up.
Headed off to work, since Nat was maybe going to get
rollerblades. Did a little "research" on the
Internet, and found there was (of course) a gimp plugin which
does the logo thingie.
Of course it didn't work.
So after some grepping in the gimp source I got it to work.
So now I have a nice little monkey when i boot.
The OLS crew are back. Hung out with nat & mig for a while,
then went home to sleep.
* * *
July 24, 2000
I am compiling the GIMP and my laptop is getting very hot.

July 25, 2000
Was trying to stay up working all night, and decided to take a
break and go rollerblading at dawn. Ended up going farther
than I had thought, and was pretty much exhausted when I got
home. So instead of going to Leo's with Joe and Ian (of
swimming fame) I went to sleep. At some point Joe called me,
like right after I went to sleep. I don't think I really knew
what was going on.
Slept for 4 hours.
Back to the sweatshop for some frustrating hacking. Sometimes
I think I don't know how to program at all.
Went to Harvard Sq. with Nat and Mig. First stop was Tweeter,
where I again got neither a camera or a dvd player (or
headphones). We then went to HMV where miguel got a new cd,
and then to Algiers, where some other office people ended up
too.
Decided to do laundry.
Was going to go to Subway, and then head back to the office.
Unfortunately Subway had other plans, and was very dark when I
arrived. So I walked back to the office.
Decided that my day was over and headed home. Today was
pretty bad, overall.
* * *
July 26, 2000
Was supposed to wake up at 8 to meet up with mig for breakfast
at 10. Woke up at 9 instead.
Fortunately I did make it on time to breakfast.
Unfortunately, miggie was late.
Waited a while, then finally called him. He was still asleep.
Eventually he got there and we had a good breakfast.
Some more work on the gunzip code. Actual progress today,
although it doesn't totally work on large files.
Went to the Harvard Square HMV where BT was giving autographs.
I felt like one of the fanboys, but
fortunately mig could talk to him about when he was in Mexico
the other week. This is sad, since it means I am boring and
uninteresting. But I have recently had my suspicions that
this was the case anyway, so it is no shock to my ears.
Dinner at Greenhouse with mig
More trying to figure out why gunzip does not work.
Algiers with nat & mig, gunzip frustrations continue.
More gunzip frustration, so I went home, and got it working.
Yay! I can sleep now. Hmm, I suppose I should support bz2.
* * *
July 27, 2000
Well, today I was the one late to breakfast :)
After breakfast, bought 2 BT cd's in preparation for
tonight.
My headphones are kinda broken. It sucks.
Did some hacking on some updater stuff.
Well BT cancelled or something, so no show. I guess he was at
some other place last night that I missed. So that pretty
much sucked.
Went to the Cave to catch up on my Friends. It nice to see
Ross and Rachel going out. Also saw some Tom Green. I don't
know why phil
wants to be canadian. Not that there's anything wrong with
it.
* * *
July 28, 2000
Went to Harvard Square and got new headphones.
They rule.
I decided to wear a tie and stuff to work today. It was funny
seeing people's reactions.
More BT cd listening and updater hacking.
Forgot to eat.
I haven't driven now for 3 years. I am pretty happy about
that.
Movie night: "What Lies Beneath". I liked it a lot;
it was suspenseful and what not. I dunno what other people
thought though...
Watched some Friends at the Cave and ate some food with Joe.
Hacked at the office before getting tired. I don't seem to be
able to hack while tired very much these days. It kinda
sucks.
* * *
July 30, 2000
The stupid vending machine is out of change. I wish there was
a "Keep the change" button on them, since i didn't
want the coins back anyway.
* * *
July 31, 2000
Got a lot of work done today. Yay.
Watched too much Tom Green and ended up going to sleep at 5
AM.
